Brushing, Brushing, Brushing!

Many kinds of bacteria thrive in your mouth. Some cause tooth decay and some cause gum disease. Some of these bacteria can colonize and begin causing damage within 24 hours, which is why brushing at least twice daily and flossing at least once daily is so important.

Thorough brushing is important, because truly clean teeth are smoother and therefore more difficult for colonizing bacteria to stick to. A particular bacteria, Streptococcus sanguis, is actually hostile toward more damaging bacteria like S. mutans, and it has been shown that a low sugar diet, coupled with frequent disruption of plaque (that is, frequent brushing) actually promotes the growth of S. sanguis, helping protect against outbreaks of the more noxious S. mutans bacteria.

        Don't beat up your teeth!

Along with flavoring, detergents, and other ingredients, many toothpastes contain significant amounts of abrasives. These abrasives are used for removing stains and plaque, but if your toothpaste is too high in abrasives, it could remove the tooth’s enamel as well. Research has proven some toothpastes to be more abrasive than others.

Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual one? The answer is a qualified 'yes.' Recent studies have shown that the electric versions do a better job of removing plaque and limiting the symptoms of gum disease. Research has also found that for most people, electric brushes are far better for removing plaque in hard-to-reach places. Who really should be using electric toothbrushes? People with gum disease; people with braces; if you're too aggressive a brusher and have damaged your tooth enamel; if you have a child who needs to brush longer or better; or if you have difficulties with manual dexterity. To reduce the possibility of decay and gum disease, a frequent, organized regimen of home care and regular dental visits are necessary.
